Hilton Hotels is the #6 Hotel Chain globally by number of hotels = 3,265 hotels

Waldorf-Astoria Collection is rapidly growing with the rebranding of several luxury hotels during the past year. Quick development of Homewood Suites hotels is increasing the Hilton brand presence in the extended stay market segment.

Sources: The total number of hotels per brand is based on hotel brand website data. Total rooms per brand is from Hotels Magazine data for Top 50 Hotel Brands rank (based on number of rooms) or Hilton Hotels website data where numbers were located for some Hilton brands. The numbers are relatively close for each brand except for a large discrepancy for the number of rooms in the Doubletree Hotels room count.

Conrad Hotels - Hilton's luxury hotel brand is Conrad.  There are currently only 18 Conrad hotels worldwide, with Chicago, Indianapolis, and Miami the only presence in the USA.  Another 6 internationally located Conrad Hotels are scheduled to open in the next two years.

Conrad Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand

Hilton Hotels - 520 hotels globally.  Full service upscale conference hotels and resorts.

Doubletree Hotels - upscale hotels in more than 160 locations throughout the U.S., Canada and Latin America.

DoubleTree Hotel Sonoma County, Rohnert Park, California

Embassy Suites - 190 hotels as of March 2009 featuring two-room suites and noted for open lobby atriums. Amenities include complimentary full cooked-to-order breakfast and nightly Manager's Reception featuring beverages and appetizers, but generally only available on weeknights.  These hotels tend to attract families and small groups for the large rooms, free breakfast, and free alcohol in the Manager's Reception. Some hotels only have evening reception on weekdays.

Hampton Inn –  1,600 locations throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Latin America in March 2009.
Hampton Inn has the benefits of complimentary breakfast and wireless internet which along with the lower prices of these hotels is a good value.

Hampton Inns are midscale market segment hotel brand of the Hilton family. Hampton Inn is the fastest growing brand. Some of the newer Hampton Inns provide a decent room, a breakfast, and you’ll get HHonors loyalty points for added value at a price comparable to other midscale hotels like Marriott Fairfield Inn and IHG Holiday Inn Express.
There are also some older property Hampton Inns in less desirable locations (I’m thinking of some Denver locations).

Hilton Garden Inn This is another Hilton midscale priced brand with about 450 hotels in March 2009.  Hilton Garden Inns tend to be in smaller towns, suburbs, and airport locations.  Most HGI properties are based on common architectural design with a cookie cutter type lobby and restaurant layout.  This is also a fast-growing brand with several new hotels opening each year. A functional business hotel and lower priced than full-service Hilton hotels for the leisure traveler.

Comparable hotel brands: Holiday Inn Express, Marriott Courtyard, Starwood Four Points, Hyatt Place

Hilton says: “Each guest room offers a hospitality center with a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker, plus complimentary high-speed Internet access, two telephones with voicemail and dataport and secure remote printing to the 24-hour complimentary business center. Other amenities include the 24-hour Pavilion Pantry® convenience mart, a complimentary Fitness Center, swimming pool, whirlpool and more.”

Hilton Garden Inn is a great road hotel or an airport hotel the night before a long flight. HGI provides a comfortable room when you are more interested in a bed rather than a vacation room.  The hotel properties certainly have a high degree of uniformity in their design and amenities. I love the HGI business centers for internet access when I don’t have my computer.

Hilton Garden Inn, Gilroy, California

Homewood Suites – 240 hotels in USA as of March 2009.  Hilton describes this hotel brand, “Spacious studio, one- and/or two-bedroom suite features a fully equipped kitchen, a remote controlled television, two telephones with voice-mail and complimentary high-speed Internet access at all U.S. locations. You'll also enjoy a daily complimentary Suite Start™ hot breakfast and a Welcome Home® reception with a light meal and beverages every Monday-Thursday (subject to state and local laws).”

Loyalty Traveler finds Homewood Suites are great if you need an apartment style place for your hotel stay. The ones around airports tend to be a great hotel value on weekends. Most guests are business workers needing extended stay lodging.

Family tip: Book the Homewood Suites room and drive or take public transportation into the city for a highly affordable family trip in comfort. This works well around several major cities in the U.S.

HHonors Competitive Advantages:

1) Award stays on points counts toward VIP elite qualification. No other hotel loyalty program counts free night award stays towards elite status.

2) Double Dip feature of HHonors allows members to earn airline miles and HHonors points with each stay. Alternatively, members can choose to receive bonus HHonors points instead of airline miles. Members can change earning preferences between points and miles at anytime online.

3) 3,200 hotels world-wide offers lots of choice in properties in many locations.

4) Hilton HHonors has no blackout dates or capacity controls for standard room redemptions as of 2009.  This was one of Hilton HHonors competitive disadvantages in prior years that now has become an advantage to compete with the best hotel loyalty programs for redeeming your hotel points when and where you want to use them.

HHonors Competitive Disadvantages

1) After many years of generous point giveaways, the promotions for free hotel nights or large points bonuses have lagged behind HHonors main competitors of Hyatt Gold Passport, Intercontinental Hotels Group Priority Club, Marriott Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest over the past several years.
